  • Harder pencils(H - H10) are best for fine lines, because they can be sharpened to the finest of points.
  • Softer pencils(B - B8) make a changing fluid line when sharp, and make a dark, broad line when blunt.

Types
  • Hexagonal pencils give a firm grip even when you are shading with the flat part of the lead.
  • Round pencils have a vast changability because a slight turn gives you access to another side of the tip.

Erasers
  • Putty rubber erasers are best used to erase soft pencil marks.
  • Hard pencil erasers work best on hard pencil marks.

  • You can use various shapes of sponges to add a sense of texture to roofs, trees, tile, etc.
  • You can also use steel wool to create streaking effects.

Brushes
  • Don't use pin-striping(really thin) brushes if at all possible. They fan out too easily and can't hold paint very well. Use the edges of other brushes to draw lines.

Backgrounds
  • Paint in the background first. Even if you need pencil lines to draw by, they usually show through the first coat.
